Original Gold Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) maker maked "4" on the needle for Steinhauer & Lück, Lüdenscheid. This example is mid to late war manafacture of zinc and most of the gold wash has been absorbed into the base metal. 
 
The 1st class Gold Wound Badge, was awarded to soldiers who were wounded five or more times, or posthumously.
